Default stuck shock retaining nut

Anyone got any tips on how to remove the cross-shaped front shock retaining nut? Can't remove the coil until I get this off...probably needs a special tool, but I don't have it....help! thanks

Try to break it loose with a pipe wrench before compressing the spring.
I made this to loosen the nut.

Hold the nut on the shaft with a box wrench (8mm?) and use a large crescent wrench (or pipe wrench on the nut. Tap the small wrench with a hammer to loosen. The impact should break it loose... worked for me.
