Thinking of getting another wagon. Few Q's about the 1999-2000 models

I've had a '98 S70 GLT sedan & still have a '96 850 T5 wagon. Lately I've been wanting another wagon. So I've been browsing the local Craigslist ads & found some nice looking V70's, but are mostly '99 & '00 models.
*If I remember right, didn't these have reliability (throttle body, electrical) issues?
*Any differences between the '99 & '00?
*Were there any Turbo models with a 5 speed?
*Would you suggest keep looking for a 1998 instead?

Personally, I'd stick with a 98 and try to find a low-mileage example. The 99 with the ETM issues is a bit scary. I think there might be 5-sp turbos but they are pretty rare.

- Many post '98 models have the ETM that is/was problemental. Most of those should have been taken care of by now.
- Little differences between '99 and '00 from what I've read.
- No US 5 speeds with turbo that I know of.
- Just get one that has been somewhat taken care of or has problems you feel comfortable working with.

Not sure where you are located (doesn't any one put the location in their profile anymore?) but there is a really nice V70 with a manual transmission on the Cleveland Craigslist at 1998 Volvo V70

Cleveland Ohio? Talk about rust like there is no tomorrow! Shop in the south where the livin' is easy, the taxes are low and the women are much prettier.

Thanks for looking out. Cleaveland is waay out there! I'm from the Sacramento California area. I'd love to have a manual with that nice dark interior too! I'll fix my profile/location now

I guess it was the 850's that they failed to make turbo and manual in the US. For a car that rare, I'd go get it.

Is the 5 speed V70 from Cleaveland a Turbo car?

They made several 5 speed (manual) non turbos
They did not make 5 speed manual light pressure turbos (GLTs)
They made about 50 1998 V70T5 5 speed manuals and about 22 V70 T5 5 speed manuals an 1999.
Not many but they do some up every now and then
I've bought and sold about a dozen 98 and four 99s over the years, a pretty high percentage!
There are a couple for sale right now, for some reason, most now seem to be on the East coast

rspi 02-11-2012 08:36 PM

Heck, I'd say 80% of Volvo's were sold on the east coast and CA.

Rust? On a modern Volvo? Come look at my 960 (301k miles as of this afternoon) who lived it's entire life in either Alaska or Cleveland. Not a spot of rust on it. Can't say that about many cars out there. Volvo's are built for and by people of the north!

I used to live in Huntsville. I know you are stretching the truth a bit with that last statement.
