...I think I have the cam pulleys aligned, but I don't see anything on the crank....am I looking at the right thing?.... here are some pics I took.....I ran out of light so I'm going to finish up in the morning. The marks/writing on the cam pulleys were already there. I don't see any marks on the engine near the crank.

ok....found the mark on the crank, but what do I line it up with on the engine.... I don't see any marks.

Haynes says there is a mark/rib behind the aux belt pully on the crank that needs to line up with a mark on the oil pump. I read that it was a mission to see these marks, so I made my own on the outside of the aux pully (seeing as I don't remove it when changing the belt).

if you look at the picture of the crank, there is a notch on the tooth closest to the tensioner...towards the engine. It's at 12 o'clock like the cam shafts. Can I just mark a spot with whiteout on the engine side? I thought there would be definite marks....like timing marks on other engines.....am I missing something.

Rules...did you mean 'water pump'?.....I'm replacing the WP and serpentine belt...so I don't think I can use your method.

As far as I understand it, there is a "raised line" on the crank underneath the aux belt pulley, which you can't see if you don't remove the pulley. That is why I lined up my timing marks (cams) and then used a sharp piece of metal and made a line/mark on the outer edge of the aux pully (I think I lined it up with the outer timing belt cover). Maybe you can "feel" the mark if you cant see it. The book says oil pump, unfortuanitly I don't know cause I didn't use that method :)

The mark is really hard to see thats why I remove the crank pulley for the serp. belt.

...bummer...what does the mark look like? is it a raised line? indent? or just painted on?

On the crank it is a raised line.
But in the inside timing pulley if you look just right on an angle you should see a small groove cut on the timing pulley close to the motor.
There is 2 types.
1.There is a groove like in the bottom of the groove where the tooth would sit.
2.There is one on each side end of the groove like where hte thinest part of the belt will sit and you would have to put it between the 2 teeth.
This is what it would look like if the pulley was off.

...damn....I see the mark on the tooth and a mark like the on you have pictured....on the engine all I can see is what looks like a "u" shaped ledge that look like a small guide for the timing belt...

what is the best way to take the pulley off....I don't have any air tools.

Then it will be really hard to get it off.
You really need an impact to get the nut loose.
Before pulling the belt try turning the crank foward some to locate the little cut looking thing like I was explaining and paint it then turn it back to see if you can line it up.

If not make sure the cams are lined up good. Then remove the top cover and mark from the pulley to the motor. Then remove the belt and the crank should be lined up. Then with the belt off and the tensioner out of your way you should be able to see the mark the rest of the time during replacement till you tension the tensioner and then you will loose sight of it again.

...ok....so I went and bought a compressor....I already had air tools but only for when I was 4x4ing and used with my C02 tank...but the tank isn't strong enough to drive the impact wrench....got an 8gal compressor

went and got a new impact wrench.....just tried and the nut won't budge....how long do I keep the impact wrench going before I should expect it to start moving? the wrench is rated 230ft/lb of torque....the compressor is set at 100psi

Turn the air pressure up to about 120 or a little higher. It should come off pretty easy.

thx....Tech....that did it....I hate to keep bugging you but I'm way behind where I thought I would be with this....What is the best way to get the pulley off?

Tap it with a hammer or heavy rubber mallet. That should pop it loose.

...man....I suck at this....tried hitting with a 3lb hammer....not budging....tried hitting with 3lb hammer and brass bar ( so I could whack it harder) not even a hint of movement.....should I get a pulley/bearing puller?

You did also remove the 4 10MM screws correct?
If not remove them. It should come off with hitting it. It might take a few good wacks. The puller will not help.

Tech, about how long does it take you to do a timing belt, tensioner, pulley water pump R&R on a Volvo

thanx Tech...I was able to use 2 prongs on a puller and wack the puller and it came off....now on to the tb tensioner =)....found the mark on the block....now that I know where it is....I could have lined it up w/o removing the crank pulley....I can't even see the marks from the wheel well because the fender is too low....oh well...I got a new compressor which should come in handy in the futre.

It usually takes me a couple of hours. The water pump gasket is the killer.
