2012 XC60 ICM Module Failed

Hello all,

I'm a first time poster and i apologize if I miss anything. I am an auto tech that works on high-end and vintage European cars, consisting of mostly Bentley, Porsche, Jaguar, and have zero experience with Volvo computer systems.

I purchased my first Volvo 2 years ago, a 2012 XC60 3.2 FWD Base. I love the car and have done all the maintenance myself. I turned my radio off one day when I was having my windshield tinted, as the first thing I do whenever I'm working on a car is turn the radio off so I wanted to be polite to whoever was working on my car. When I went to leave the radio would not turn back on and the screen stayed off. This had happened once before and all I needed to do to get the system to come back online was pull the 2 fuses associated with the radio and everything worked perfectly again, well that didn't work, so I disconnected the battery for a few minutes to reset everything, unfortunately that did not work either. So when I arrived back to the shop I scanned my car with our Autel. 2 communication DTC's were flagged in 2 other modules, I don't remember which ones, but the code is u015600. After a quick Google search I found a Technical Journal relating to that code. It says that if the DTC is flagged as permanent the ICM has failed due to a faulty NAND memory chip and must be replaced, and new software downloaded from Volvo. Well Volvo doesn't give us access to their software, so I scheduled a diagnostic with the local dealer as the 1 Volvo specialty shop in Naples closed a couple years ago.

To my surprise the dealer quoted me at $2080 to replace the module and program it, which I instantly declined, that is an insane price for a infotainment module. The screen will not power on, and the backlights to the steering wheel controls for the radio are always off. Everything else works fine. My question is can I use an ICM from another car? I've found them on eBay for less than $100, or is the module coded to each specific car? I can't even replace the radio with an aftermarket unit because they all use the ICM to function correctly. I'm not willing to drop $2100 on a 10 year old car with 150,000 miles on it just to have a functioning radio and screen.

I appreciate any insight!

Are you familiar with xemodex? (i've used them a couple of hundred times for module repairs, and have always been pleased with the service)

I am not familiar with that service. I clicked the link and selected ICM repair, but their website states that it is out of stock. $279 for an ICM rebuild is much more reasonable than $2080 from the dealer. I have contacted them, but I want to ask another question first. I found an aftermarket stereo online that will replace the screen in my car, but when I emailed them they told me that the ICM needs to be functional for their unit to work. What doesn't makes sense to me is, as far as I understand, the ICM in my model year is the screen, which with this unit will be completely replaced. If the retailer selling this hit misunderstanding what I'm asking about completely replacing the factory ICM? or am I missing something? I would much rather replace the entire stereo with a more modern system than pay to have a 10 year old system repaired. Do you have experience with systems like this?

Do you have the big screen in your car - or the smaller one shown lower on your linked page that won't work with that system?

Sorry for the late replay, been a crazy week. This link is what my screen looks like. I believe it is 7" screen, I don't have navigation or any other options, just the basics for that year, XM, Bluetooth, etc.

Any luck with solving this? I have same car and same problem. Purchased an ICM used on eBay. The most it will do is the screen turns on with Volvo logo for a minute and then goes blank. Thinking it may also need a new IAM but I don’t know if those are locked to the vin.

Hey! I'm sorry for the super late reply. I've been so freaking busy recently and my emails have been piling up. I actually don't have the car anymore, on December 3rd an 18 year old who just got his license thought it would be a good idea to weave through traffic and cut around cars in his mom's Nissan Altima, he lost control and slammed into the right side of my XC60 hard enough to push the B-pillars in and deploy all the airbags, so it needed more repair work that it was worth and my insurance totaled it. If you have a module I would try and see if it can be coded to your car, I have the factory software at my shop, I'm located in SW Florida. I've never done programming or coding on a Volvo as that's not what we work on, I'm more familiar with VAG products. which is why I bought a VW to replace my Volvo. I'll help you as much as I can.
