Default 2012 XC60 Transmission Fluid Drain

Has anyone drained and replaced the Auto Transmission fluid in their 2012 XC60 (3.2)? Volvo doesn't recommend changing the AT fluid unless you've towed trailers, which I have. Because I haven't attempted it before on my Volvo, I haven't removed the engine covers to look for the fluid fill port, drain plug or filter. Also because no publishers produce an after market shop manual for the XC60, I have nothing to review before hand. I've performed maintenance on my autos for 40 years and this should be a simple straight forward process, unless Volvo makes it difficult as they usually do.

Thanks for any input.

can't talk to the '12s but many dealers offer a flush service which uses the transmission cooler lines to pump out the fluid (a drain/fill from the pan only gets about 40% of the fluid out). as to getting a periodic flush, most on the board will agree its a good idea, particularly on the older models. Some suggest every 50K, others every 100K.

Moderator,
thanks for the reply. I'm performing this flush myself because the Volvo dealers in this area refuse to perform a transmission flush and refill. They've argued it's not necessary even though the engineers who designed the auto tell you in the manual it's a good idea to change the fluid if you tow trailers or drive in harsh conditions. I've reviewed several vids on YouTube and read several posts on forums about the subject. None of these specifically addressed the 2012 XC60 (or that series). I have a good idea how to perform the flush using the transmission cooler lines and the drain plug, but I was hoping someone out there in Volvo land had blazed that trail before me.

thanks

Default 2012 XC60 Transmission Fluid Drain

I have a 2004 XC70 and the transmission flush is an easy task using the cooler lines and dipstick fill tube. I perform it at 60,000 miles and do not tow anything. However when it comes to my 2012 XC60, its a closed system with no dipstick for refill. There is a drain at the bottom and cooler lines to work with, but with no entry point for a funnel feed, I went to the dealer for the $250 flush service. I too didnt want to experiment but as soon as some one does, I am all ears to the procedure.

I really need help with changing the transmission fluid on my 2014 XC60. This is the standard model, *not* the T5. The dealer says the fluid is "worn and burnt from normal wear." It's not leaking. Also, I don't tow.

I need to do this myself both for the experience and to save money (aka, I can't pay the dealer's $275.79 estimate for this service).

Anyway, there's not much info on this online, including YouTube, so I don't know where to start.

Please assist. Thank you!

Default Burnt / Worn ATF

How does your dealer know that the fluid is burnt if he cant readily get a sample to look at? There is no dipstick which mean he would either have to remove a hose or open the drain.

The 2012 model 6-speed does indeed have a fill port on top of the case. Drain and measure what comes out, add back the same quantity. From experience, you will be adding about 4 1/2 qts.
