Default When should the car shift into 8th gear

At 55 MPH if I manually shift into 8th gear the RPM is about 1500 RPM right at the when the torque curve flattens out for the T5 engine (7th gear is about 1750 RPM). With the car in ECO mode I can put the transmission back in auto and it will stay in 8th for all but the larger hills. In ECO mode I can't get the car to shift into 8th automatically until about 62-65 MPH (I bump the speed up 1 MPH until it shifts). At 55 MPH I have discovered I can "trick it" to shift in cruise control if I push the coast button and immediately re-engage cruise control the car will shift into 8th and stay there just like when I manually shift it. If I'm going 65 it will stay in 8th 95% of the time, only the biggest hill cause it to downshift, but it goes back to 8th automatically. I'm wondering if there are any other people out there as geegish as I am, worrying about what gear my 8 speed transmission is in.
