Xc60 recharge
Hey all. Would love some insight. First time Volvo buyer here, also a first time plug-in buyer. Nervous about buying so early in the ev tech rollout, but my thought is if you can afford an ev, you have an obligation to buy one when it comes time for a new vehicle.
The xc60 Recharge is extremely hard to come by. I spent two days searching dealerships, and finally found one close enough to what I'm looking for *except* the tire size. It has 20" wheels rather than the standard 19", and Volvo won't swap them for me. I've read that this means a harsher ride and less tire selection. Thoughts? I keep cars a long time, and really wanted a quiet, smooth vehicle. For what it's worth, my preference would have been to wait and order the exact car I want, however, I have to take delivery this year in order to realize the $7500 tax credit (the new legislation puts an income cap on it starting in 2023, assuming it passes). Wanted to do the overseas delivery too. First-world problems! |
I'm in Scotland and have a 2022 xc60 recharge with 20" tyres. I had an earlier xc60 with 19's and actually find no difference on our wonderful not so smooth roads.
I also tow a caravan and if it was not in my rear mirror all the time I would forget its there. Although your spec. from videos could be slightly different just ask if you want to query anything else. Regards from Edinburgh |

Thanks so much! I really love the look of them, and I probably wouldn't be fixating on this if I didn't read so much about it. I'm coming from a 17 inch wheel with a soft ride, so I'm nervous about it. Separately, how are things going with the battery? Any quirks I should know about?

Best of luck with your new recharge, and yes, “knock on wood”. That’s what my wife and I are doing. Got our 2022 XC60 Recharge ER late May. Our first Volvo and first EV. The car drives beautifully. Smooth, fast and comfortable. I’m not impressed with the infotainment and various tech, but it’s fun to drive on electric. With not buying gas I feel like we’re getting away with something! We too got “stuck” with the 20” wheels and I tried to swap them out as well. I was worried about the ride, wanted to save the $1000, and wanted to “offset” the ridiculous $3200 B&W sound system ours came with (our car was the only one available for months and we’d been trying to get my wife a car we both liked for 8 months after her 2013 Subaru got totaled in a small fender bender that somehow bent the frame - bad time to be looking for a new car and we too wanted a plug in and the $7500 credit). And by the way, sorry to you audiophiles out there but my 71 year old ears don’t notice any meaningful difference from my 2015 Mercedes’ Harmon Karden speakers. Anyway, the dealer wouldn’t do the wheel swap, said it was a warranty thing. The good news is I haven’t noticed any difference around town or on a 1500 mile road trip we took right after we got the car. The bad news is BE CAREFUL when parking along a curb. I’ve been a car nut my whole life and have had lots of them. I take care of them. I’ve always done a lot of driving. But everyone grazes a curb now and then pulling into a parking space. That might scuff a tire, but the 4” high curb I scraped (I was going very slow and didn’t hit it hard at all) chewed up a 5” long piece of my wheel since it’s lower to the ground. These wheels look beautiful but are as fragile as they come. Functionally, the wheel is fine, but it bothers me everytime I see what I did to our new car!
As for “knock on wood”, our car died within one month of purchase. All of a sudden it would start intermittently, wouldn’t lock, didn’t recognize key, error messages… Got the software update early June and so far so good but reading these Volvo forums, I feel like it’s a matter of time before some other technology issue arises. My trust has been shaken and it will take some time of trouble free usage to come back (or I need to stop reading these forums!). I’m afraid to install Apple CarPlay when I can since people are writing in saying it screwed up this or that. Candidly if I had read the forums instead of only all the wonderful online reviews I saw, I doubt I’d have spent $70,000 (!) to get the car. So to all of us, enjoy the beautiful looks and ride of the car, but fingers crossed and hope the technology holds up. |
We were able to order last year (delivery in February), so went with options to try and maximize comfort as that was a top criteria for my wife. That led us to select the 19" wheels (which are rare on dealer ordered cars here) and air suspension. That combination has proven to be great, though don't know how much difference one would see with larger wheels and no air suspension. Things I've read previously suggested the ride could be harsh without that combination, but I'm sure it depends on what you're used to and prefer. By ordering, we avoided the hefty price of the B&O which would have been pointless as my wife only listens to NPR. Of course ordering last year means we don't have the extended range that you'd get now. While that's disappointing, we still haven't added fuel in over 3 months. That will change this weekend in preparation for a road trip. Overall, we love this vehicle and have been starting to play with Apple Carplay now that 2.2 downloaded successfully via OTA update. We've had a few glitches with the infotainment like everyone else (prior to 2.2), but nothing major that required a visit to the dealer ... knock on wood as you say!

I have a 2019 XC 60 T8 and it has 20" tires with out air suspension ( I couldnt tell much of a diff with the 1 with air suspension....but others rave about it.........) I have no issues with the ride and quite like it.....but we all experience things differently.
The continentals that came with my car have the foam in them to give it a quieter ride........I just recently found out (like 2 days ago) many places will not repair a tire with the foam.....They say it can be done....just their policy not to do them (mr tire...costco) and 1 small private shop stated some can and some can not and its a messy job as some tires have a lot of glue to keep the foam in place and he rather not do it....at least he was honest! So I bought 4 new tires.....Around $1100 installed (Im in the USA) I went with the Continental EXTREMECONTACT DWS 06 PLUS 255/45/20. |
