05 XC70 splash guard/undercarriage panel repair

Have a 2005 XC-70 that I've owned about 4 months. Noticed this weekend while driving at speeds of 40+ a dragging sound from front end; a friend followed me and identified something coming down and dragging near the front tire.

My bro-in-law, a BMW tech, looked and said he saw a loose panel that obviously had 3 or 4 clips or holders missing. He couldn't tell from the side (he was just visiting, so I couldn't get him under car) if it needed screws or clips or rivets to fix.

I called my dealer (Herzog-Meier in Beaverton) and described the problem, and they said it sounded like the splash guard. They estimated $50-100 to fix and said it's not covered by warranty.

I'm hoping this is something I can fix myself for the price of a couple of screws. Anyone have any insights?

RE: 05 XC70 splash guard/undercarriage panel repair

This should be very easy to fix if the splash guard is still in good shape. There are six or so bolts that hold the splash guard to the bottom of the car; the bolts simply go through holes in the splash guard and screw into the frame. If the holes have not been compromised (ripped or enlarged), you'll just need to get new bolts to replace those that are missing. Worst case if too many of the splash guard holes are messed up, you'll probablyneed to get a new splash guard.
