I have a 2010 XC70 173k mikes. The charging failure light came on. Had the alternator replaced and a sensor to go along with that. The battery is good. After having this done the same warning light came in while driving and the engine stalled as in it would not go over a few miles an hour. Pulled over, put in park, and revved the engine a couple of times. Light went off and I cannot get it to duplicate it again for the mechanic. I take it to a Volvo specialist in my area. He has not seen anything like this. Anyone else experience anything like this?

 

Here's my car's weirdness story: I own a 2012 VW CC. during the winter - only on very cold days (like 10F or below), when driving the battery light will come on - usually about 5 minutes into my drive. Turn the car off, restart and the battery light stays off for the rest of the drive. I've tested with my VOM to confirm when the warning light was on, car was running on 12V, when I restart, the alternator kicks in and it shows 14V+. So first dealer says my main cable shows too much resistance, replaces it and seems better (for a while) but then the problem comes back. I lived with that for a year as I don't commute any more but this winter took a trip to VT and it happened 3 times. I was scheduled for my 90K service and brought it to the attention of dealer #2. The tech checked around and noted some of the grounding points to the transmission had corrosion and suggested replacing a different cable (and cleaning the ground connectors in the process). I decided not to bother as I figure I can get under the car in the warm weather and clean the ground points and connectors. SO... back to your car - sounds like you may have a similar issue with a loose connector or a connection point that needs to be cleaned - particularly ground connections (theory is it can throw off the voltage sensing). Hope this helps to give you some ideas to talk to your shop about...
