Driveshaft questions
 

I'm working on a '98 Cross Country, and the center support bearing is bad. I've searched all over the forum, done every kind of google search I can think of, and tried eBay.

I know Colorado Driveshaft will sell me a rebuilt driveshaft for $450 or so, and my local driveline shop says they can get a bearing out of California somewhere for $189, plus tax, plus shipping, but I'm finding it hard to believe those are my only two options. For something that's such a common problem, do these really just not exist anywhere? I'm really surprised none of our usual volvo suppliers have these.

So, two questions....

Has anybody found a source for center support bearings?

Does anybody have a part number, or know a supplier, for the U-joint in the driveshaft?

My CV joints are good, so I'm not really in need of boots for those, but I guess it would be good to know if they exist somewhere too.

I found a U-joint. I was talking with the parts guy at my local dealer and he told me that the driveshaft yokes did not have slots cut for a C-clip, and that the factory secured the U-joint by peening the yoke around it. Basically he said they're not serviceable, so he was surprised that mine was.

He surmised that the previous owner had the yokes replaced by a driveline specialist, but the previous owner was a checkbook mechanic....a "here's a check, fix it" kinda person. Not exactly the type to go to the trouble to have their driveshaft modified for the ease of future repairs.

So anyway, I'm just wondering if anybody else has noticed whether their U-joint is serviceable or not, and what year car you've got. I guess it doesn't really matter, since I've got mine done, but I'm curious if maybe it's just a variation in the '98 cars
