Funky sound - transaxle

Hi. I have a 99 xc with about 130K miles.

Recently, it has developed some troubling sounds.

The first sound occurs when backing up slowly. It sounds like there are some metallic binding/high pitched scraping noises coming from the front of the car. (like the sounds you might get from a drum brake if there were issues inside it causing it to bind and release, if that makes any sense. This sound occurrs occasionally, and when it does, it is only for a moment, and only when backing up.

The second sound occurrs when letting off the gas after accellerating. At the moment when there is notorque on the drivetrain, there is a metallic rapping - like someone is taking a 6mm allen key and rapping on the transmission case five or six times in rapid succession. It seeps to happen at any speed.

The two sounds are may be related. They seem to have started at about the same time.

On last thing. The check engine light came on, and I twice read the codes with a "civilian" OBDII code reader (Equus). Interestingly, I got no codes from the reader. I cleared the codes with the reader and the light is now off -- for now.

Thanks in advance

RE: Funky sound - transaxle

For the noises it might be the driveshaft or angle gear.

Some scanners won't read all or some of the Volvo codes.

I was afraid that it might be the angle gear! Thanks for the quick response.
