Jerking - Stumling in gear

Hi all as my Sig says i have a 1998 XC70 and after a 2.5h highway drive the other day when leaving the highway and stopping at a traffic light the car would jerk and also again just off acceleration but when the car was moving it would be smooth, the day after and ever since then when I start the car and put it in gear (D or R) it gives a big jerk and stalls, I am able to modulate by giving gas and putting it in gear two or three times and finally get it to move and not stall but shudder and off we go.

It seems as if the torque converter is kicking in and locking as if it was at highway speeds, any other ideas or a way to permanently unlock the TC, so that I could rule out or confirm that problem?

Check for CEL and trans codes.

RE: Jerking - Stumling in gear

I have an update on this problem. No solution yet but more information.
Idle is smooth; when I shift from P to D or R the RPM will drop to about 500.
I replaced the Plugs, distributor cap, and wires, now the car does not stall any more but it seems to be lacking power under 2000rpm, and then it kicks in and pulls as if nothing ever happened.
I finally get a malfunction code P0705 this is a gear selector out of range, what ever this means, I will be doing more research on this.

Gear position sensor

Turn the key to on and do not start the engine and move the gear selector from top to bottom about ten times to clean the gear position sensor so the computer knows which gear it is in,then turn the ignition off and star the car and test drive it,this is a common problem it is mostly associated with the flashing arrow story.
