Loud cracking noise 2000 xc70?

Hi all --

Our 2000 xc70 with 104,000 miles on it periodically makes a loud cracking noise that sounds like a big rock is hitting the windshield. It seems to happen most often when the car first gets going and then when you make a right or left turn. It will also happen if car goes over bumpy ground but the sound will be not so loud.

It seems to happen more often when it is cold outside but I live in Southern California so "cold" is not really that cold (maybe 40F at the lowest).

The mechanics at the dealership of course could not replicate sound nor offer any opinion as to what is causing the sound. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum fpswhite.

I think mine does the same, once in a great while, only it is more af a snap. I thought it was rocks, but could never find any knicks. Then felt it may be a lever or latch snapping into place. Does yours come from the passenger side?

Our 95 850 does the same thing...different car but same platform. Anyway, I found it to be only when it is cold outside. It usually happens when the ventilation systems is in auto mode or when I put the defroster on. I had a Volvo shop replicate it and it turned out to be the windshield and the plastic/vinyl dash expanding and contracting when warm air hits a cold windshield.

Hope this helps
