Need some help!

Hello,
I'm new to here and to volvos. I recently purchased an 01 v70 xc. 190000 miles. The previous owner ( an older couple ) had done all the scheduled maintenance. My wife loves the car. It was making a weird noise and found it coming from alternator pulley. I replaced alternator (not fun) but completed the task. The noise is gone but now the el power service required light and battery light are on. I double checked all connections. I did run the the car with no belt before I replaced the alternator.
Any ideas on what could be wrong?
New alternator came from oreilly auto parts

Bad alternator. What's the voltage at the battery when running?

Thanks, you were right.
Voltage at the battery was 10 something. I replace it with another "new" one and all is well. Although now the check engine light is on . It does not appear to be driving any differently. I did break off the dipstick top. Would that cause a check engine light. I'll have to pick one up tomorrow. It's in he hole but I put tape on it so it wouldn't fall in.

check engine light is just saying there's a fault code stored in the computer. For piece of mind you should get the codes read so as to know if its related to the alternator/voltage drop or not. If you have an Autozone or similar nearby, they may be willing to pull the codes for you. Otherwise you can drive it for a few miles and the light may go off (not sure if your year will turn off the light if the fault is no longer there after something like 100 miles). If you plan on doing your own maintenance, it may be worth a trip to eBay to buy your own OBD-II code reader... they go for under $100.
