Default Advice sought on transmission replacement

OK, so I've finally accepted that my 2001 XC70 Transmission is dying!

The car has done nearly 200,000 kms (or approx 125,000 miles). Generally it is in very good condition (apart from the tranny) and, well, I kinda like the car! So what are my options;

a) repair the transmission - my state volvo dealer has said that the valve body has died, replacement cost is about $2000 AU, BUT they generally don't recommend doing this as it doesn't always work (?!) and it is better to replace the entire transmission!

b) replace the transimission with a 'new' one - cost $8000 AU (this is the local dealer's recommended option)

c) replace the transimission with a second hand one - my local volvo mechanic has suggested this and thinks he can source a later (post 2003) transmission and fit it for around $4000 AU.

Each of these options have their own set of questions though, which is why I'm seeking the advice of forum members.

With option a) - does this work, or am I just putting an new valve body in with an old transmission and expecting the same problems to reappear?

With option b) - is this worth it, or am I just wasting money on a car that has already clocked up 200,000 kms

with option c) - what are the risks, is a low milage, late model transmission a good investment, or am I buying somebody elses problem?

So I put it to you Forum Members - what would you do?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

125k miles isn't a super lot for these cars. Don't know the exchange rate so that's an unknown for me.

Is the "new" one from the dealer really new or is it rebuilt. Is the "second hand" one rebuilt or just pulled?

Used and/or rebuilds can be a crap shoot. But I've got 90K on a rebuilt (American) in my van.

I guess it comes down to numbers. How much are you willing to budget for repairs down the road vs. a new car. Another used car could be anything.

Took her to my local volvo mechanic yseterday.

He's a bit uncomfortable too about the second hand option, and has suggested a rebuild might be better, gave me the number of a specialist transmission shop (who gurantee their work!) so I've booked her in for an assessment and quote.

At 125 miles on the clock, I reckon I'll get another five years out of her easily, (thanks r220) so it may not be a bad investment.

Will post the results when I get them.
