Sudden Suspension Failure

Hi -
This just happened.
I hopped in, started my 2004 XC70 and started to pull forward. Hadn't gone more than 2 feet when there was a loud "bang" from the driver's front. The driver's front corner immediately dropped a few inches and stayed there. A bit of smoke or the like then appeared to come from under the hood. I stopped as soon as I heard the bang.

Raised the hood and saw nothing obvious with the strut from that side. Tried bouncing the car on both sides. The passenger side appears normal. The driver's side bounces less than an inch.

Was able to drive the car back to another parking sport without further incident or sound, so I don't think it's drivetrain related.

Anyone ever heard of a strut giving out all at once like this?

TIA

Ross

Check for a broken spring.

Goldenblock here! Sorry about your ordeal. Sounds very familiar... You are getting the aw 70/71 death whine. Internal damage has occured, so changing the filter and pan wont repair it, only get you moving in short increments in emergency. I lived through that nightmare... Car will go fine for about a mile or 2 then stop shifting/ moving until it sits for like 20 minutes, then same. Oftentimes when you flush the transmission on highmiles it will be fine for a bit until the car is pushed and really driven longer. My advice from experience is get the tranny with the warrany quickly!!! If you feel the need to try filter- go ahead i tried all methods to try and revive my Aw 71... No luck! Prayers to you and be safe Oss Goldenblock
