transmission shifts odd, and gauges not working

I have a chance to buy a 2002 X/C with 107,000 miles. The price is $4000 US dollars. The vehicle seems to run ok, but the transmission thuds into gear sometimes. After the car gets warm there is a delay between the time you put the gear shifter into drive and when the transmission actually shifts into drive. AND all the gauges don't work: no odometer, tach, speedometer, or idiot lights except a check engine light when you turn the key on. The check engine light promply goes out as soon as the car is started.

Could the transmission and gauge problems be related?

Is 4000 dollars too much to pay?

thanks for the help.

No transmission codes and gauges work.

I bought the 2002 x/c. Started it today and all the gauges worked so I don't believe there is any relation between the hard shifting transmission and the non working gauges.

There were no transmission codes thrown, but the tranny fluid looks dirty. I'm hoping a Volvo dealer transmission service, and a software upgrade will help the hard shifting.

If you have experience with Volvo dealer transmission service, or any advice please let me know.

I have heard that adding new transmission fluid to a suspect tranny can cause worse symptoms, or even tranny death. I'm hoping for the best.

Thanks

I have the same year and model Volvo and had the same exact transmission symptoms. My gauges work though. I came real close to getting rid of it thinking the tranny was failing which a lot of them do. I found a new shop. It is an independent shop that specializes in Volvos and Toyotas. They flushed the tranny fluid using the correct fluid (very important because my former shop either wasn't doing the flush or using the wrong fluid) and then did some software upgrades. The total came to $300 for the upgrades and fluid service. It is now like new. Try that out before thinking the worst on the tranny. Software upgrades were key to me keeping this car. I have 85,000 miles and am so happy we didn't give up on it.

Hi there, I was told by my Volvo specialist that the slow response to engage the tranny (only in Drive) is somewhat of a characteristic of the AWD in the XC 70 and I had nothing to fear (mine is pretty lazy too). So far so good (it's been 9 mnths since I've had the car) - I just wait with my foot on the brake until it engages (only about a second or so) but it aint a nice feeling and can be a pest if I'm getting out of a carspace at a busy shopping strip and I'm a bit hurried.

Fingers crossed ... :o

Cheers...
