Turbocharger and sludge

Out of nowhere massive white smoke started coming out of my tailpipe. I immediately parked the car and checked the oil. It was within range. I had it taken to the dealer where i purchased it as a certified pre-owned and I am within the warranty.

The dealer is now telling me I need a new turbocharger and it will not be covered because they see signs of sludge. Now i have changed the oil on a regular basis they now tell me i shouild have changed the oil every 3000 miles not the 7500 and I am out of luck....$2500.

Do I have any options, and how do i know this sludge problem has not been slowly building and sold to me that way?

Thank you...

These cars are known to generate carbon and sludge. What happens is the oil tube will get plugged up not allowing oil to return and the turbo eventually goes. I have to disagree with the place you bought the car. If you take it to court, you can show that the recommended interval is 7500 miles and where does an owner get info for his car? The owner's manual.

I do suggest that oil changes be done at sooner intervals especially turbo models.

Sorry, but the dealer is lying. I suspect because it doesn't like the reimbursement rate from Volvo for warranty work. I don't know the year of yours, but my 06 manual says to change oil at 7,500 miles. Not 3,000 as your dealer says.

Take this up NOW with Volvo. There are notes in here who to contact. I suspect your dealer is trying an end run around warranty obligations for its own financial benefit.

Caveat: this assumes you can prove you have maintained yours as recommended, and are within the mileage/time limits of the CPO warranty.

Don't wait.

I don't have a number, VADIS is on my home computer, but myswedishparts.com lists a new turbo for the 2.4L 02-04yrs as $746.52. Buy that and install it or get a local mechanic to do the job for you and save yourself a lot of money. You can get one used from car-part.com for about half that price.
