2006 XC90 Interior Blower Motor

Hello All! I am new to the Volvo Forums, but not to forums in general. I am quite active in the BMW and Mercedes forums as well, so I understand how this stuff works. Sorry if this question has been asked before, but none of the replies have seemed concrete.

Today, my Volvo has given me my first problem ever! The interior blower fan will not stop working, it runs all the time. At first, it ran only on high speed, but even when the car was off it wouldn't turn off. So me being the intelligent person I am, decided to disconnect the battery hoping to solve the issue, but no luck... The issue still persists. I am not sure exactly what is wrong, the fan speed now is blowing only at the minimum level and cannot be controlled. (turning the knob, the led's show as if the speed has increased, but it does nothing) Now, as a type the fan is still running. I realize the battery will die, but there really is nothing to do.

Any ideas?

BTW, I am the original owner and 108K miles later, so I know the history of the car.

In the BMW, it is known as FSR.

In the Volvo world, "Resistor Pack", basically same thing, different names.

So is the blower motor and resistor needing replacement? Is it all a single part? Thanks

Two separate parts if you watch the video link above.

Mwattsvolvo,

You dont need to change both parts. You need to find out what part is giving you the trouble and only change that part.

Even if you find out which part is malfunctioning, replacing both might not be a bad idea. I'd hate to fix it only to have to tear it apart again in a few months.

Is there any chance this could be a switch issue?

Most blower motors do not have the ball bearings.
They shaft simply rotates on the "bushings".

Lack of lubrication usually kills the motor (binding).
Best is to remove the blower motor and add 1-2 drops of oil at each end of the shaft, this will increase the lifespan of the motor.

Look up XC90 blower motor 5 screws vs 4 screws, usually the "impossible" screw is left behind by breaking the tab. During re-installation, the blower motor is held by only 4 screws. This trick works.

What would cause the blower to keep running several minutes after I turn off the key?

Replaced blower motor and cage AND the resistor about a year ago. Worked great till this week. Fan stayed on till it drained the battery.

Once it starts squeaking....

anybody have any kind of timetable as to when the fan starts squeaking to when you should replace it by a certain time? It’s like a $1200 fix.. so just trying to weigh my options .... can I wait??? ( it’s been squeaking for months ) or am I risking not having the heat/ defroster one day during the winter months here in the Northeast?
