Default Headlights

ok so I am new to this forum and I did search first but wasn’t able to come up with an answer. So my problem is this, got the low beam bulb failure message, went to the parts store to buy a new bulb to find out it takes the HID bulbs and it was going to cost $100. The headlights on the car 2004 XC90 are old and hazed and cracked so I decided I would just replace the whole assembly. Ordered some used replacements from eBay, put the passenger side in and nothing...switched the bulbs around...nothing...now my DRL are working (inner most light) but at night I have nothing...not even high beams work...only thing that works are fog lights...anyone have any idea what I need to do now? Should I replace the ballasts now? Checked all fuses as well nothing there either. And of course dealership says bring it in......please help.

There are four components to the HID headlights.
  1. Bulbs
  2. Ballasts
  3. Ignitor
  4. Wiring
Used headlight assemblies are, in my view, a total waste of money. The used ones are probably falling apart inside. There are aftermarket alternatives that are high quality.

On a car of this age, the bulbs probably need changing anyway because the brightness decreases over time. I recently had a 2003 Mercedes with HID and it was not safe to drive at night. I installed new bulbs and all fixed. But, both bulbs worked from the start.

These are high voltage parts so unless you have training, you need to have someone who is experienced look at it. When I have this issue, it is usually the ballast that has failed. I change ballast, ignitor and bulb. If one side is out, change them both all of it.

It is part of owning a car with HID. If you want lower cost, you have to buy a halogen bulb car.
