Looking into buying an XC90
Hi everyone!
My husband and I are looking into buying an XC90 within the next few months. I did some research and came across several GM transmission complaints, especially in the T6 models between 2003-2005. I like how the T6 has more power and torque than the 2.5T and 3.2. Not as many V8's around and they are more than we can afford. From the prices I've seen around, we can afford up to a 2008, and maybe 2009.
What years of the XC90 models, up until 2009, have less transmission problems? We don't want to have to take it to the shop often or have to replace the transmission every however many thousands of miles. We need a reliable XC90, especially with a toddler, and newborn on the way.
Thank you,
Sharlene

2.5T from 2003-2006: the Aisin AF33 5speed has been bulletproof
3.2 from 2007-present: the Aisin TF80-SC 6speed has been bulletproof, thus far...
All of the V8s have the same AW 6speed as the 3.2, but there have been reports of transmission trouble in the V8s.

Thank you! Good information to know. So I'm guessing most years of the T6 had transmission issues and to avoid them?
Also did the 2006 3.2 have transmission issues?

The first model year for the 3.2 was 2007, and all 3.2s have the TF80-SC 6speed, which has proven reliable in the 3.2 thus far, but NOT totally reliable in the V8.
The XC90 transmission troubles in the T6 and the V8 are probably not due to the transmissions themselves (both the GM 4speed and the TF80-SC are reliable in other vehicles or even other versions of the XC90). The problems seem to stem from the fact that the T6 and V8 engines output maximum torque that is at the limit of what the transmissions were designed to handle. In both cases Volvo underspecced the transmissions for those engines which seems to have led to premature failures. The weaker engined XC90s (2.5T and 3.2) output a lot less torque, and thus have done just fine with the AW TF80-SC (in the 3.2) and its 5speed predecessor (in the 2.5T).
