MAF do it yourself?

The check engine light came on during a 2 hour trip. Next day I started the car and the light was off. Then after driving for a bit it came back on.

So I went to the local indy and he hooked it up to the computer and said the Mass Airflow Meter needed to be replaced. Is this a do it yourself job or is it necessary for the shop to calibrate the MAF with the computer?

When I asked the mechanic, he said they charge 1 hour to change it because he will use the computer to recalibrate. I’ve never heard of this needed to be done, so I thought I would ask. It looks pretty easy to replace.

He already charged me $85 to hook into the computer to diagnose. So he wants to charge another hour to install.

This is a 2006 XC90 5 cylinder.

this is easy, you can recalibrate yourself too.

if i may ask, what kind of mechanic is this? what fault tracing was done? what code was set?

This may not fix your problem at all, but you can change it. let me know how it goes.

If its like most of them it takes 10 minutes to replace and the ECU should recalibrate itself. Go to autozone and they'll read the codes for "Nothing". Then you can decide what to do on your terms.

The mechanic I took it to specializes in Volvo and Mercedes. I didn’t ask about which codes he read. I ordered the MAF from Advanced Auto Parts. When I go to pick it up I’ll read the codes there and double check.

I can’t believe my mechanic. I’ve used this guy for a lot of things and specifically asked if this was something I could do myself. He said he needed to recalibrate the computer and that’s why he charges an additional hour to install.

His total bill to do this is:
$85 to read the codes and diagnose.
$305 for a new MAF (Volvo part)
$85 to install it

Crazy. Advanced Auto Parts has a reconditioned MAF for $137 ( or actually $117 if ordered online after 15% discount and core charge) and they would have read to codes for free.

So all I need to do put in the new one and the computer will automatically reset itself? I should be able to do it today as I already had Advance Auto Parts send it to their store.

I just changed it and after driving for 30 miles, the engine light is off. So It looks like this did fix the problem

When I went to Advanced Auto Parts, the engine light was not on so I wasn’t able to pull the code. The refurbished MAF looks band new. It’s made by Bosh and exactly like factory Volvo MAF.
