Which Programmer?
 

I'm new to Volvos and am quickly figuring out that working on them isn't the same as the other american cars I'm familiar with. Can you more knowledgeable guys tell me what's the best programming tool for a diyer like me to be able to diagnose and clear codes with. I mean the volvo ones not just the generic OBD codes.

I've seen tools like the Autel AA101 and the VCT2000 and many others. Just not sure which one would serve me best and not cost an arm and a leg. I bought a copy of the VADIS software but it appears to be useless without the right hardware.

My vehicle is an 03 XC90 T6. Thanks guys, and girls too.

if you just want to see what volvo codes you have then i would get a bsr ppc diagnostic if you can find one $200ish on fleabay. I will not reprogram modules and such but will tell you volvo specific codes

Volvo Wholesale Parts has several tools, a generic OBD2 tool for about $150,
I bought a similar one at Harbor Freight for about $140, havent plugged it into the Volvo yet. The Volvo brand tools (DICE ect) are quite pricey. How much was the VADIS software? I think you need the DICE tool and a laptop to use it effectively I think the DICE tool goes for about $1500 at Volvo Wholesale Parts. If you make any progress with it please come back and let us know, I'm a pretty hardcore do-it -yourselfer too.

I got the VIDAS software off of ebay for $20 but it sounds like you can download it for free from the torrent website. After much post reading it sounds like I may have to buy a VCT 2000 to go with it for my 2003. The Dice works with VIDA software and it sounds like you need a subscription to use it which is spendy. I've found some VCT2000's from china for around $400. I may have to spring for one. The nearest Volvo dealer is about 250 miles from me.

Would still love any other input on the subject.

return it the $29 from harbor freight works the same way for generic OBD2 not for the volvo codes
look for the BSR PPC, you will be better off paying for the new BSR PPC that comes in around $500-600 than to mess with the over priced china knockoffs.

What you need is the DICE tool with VIDA software. Can be picked up from AliExpress for around $200 or eBay for a little bit more. You will be able to read DTCs, erase DTCs, error tracing, test components+++ but NOT download and install new software. For that, you'll need to be registered as a dealer + pay a pretty expensive subscription.

I use snap on diagnostics

I use a Snap On Solus scanner and it allows you to enter all of the Volvo systems. However, it only works on 2000 and up vehicles.

I think vida is good. The Chinese clone is less than $100, but don't know if it would work.
