radio/electrical problems

Has anyone had trouble with the xc 90 radio. I've had my T6 AWD for almost one year and just under 30k miles and the radio has been a near constant source of problems. Initially (first 2 weeks of ownership) it had periods where it had lots of static then it began going off and on at random and sometimes would just not come on. Of course at the dealership they could find nothing wrong on at least 4-5 visits. Finally after a stay at the dealer of a few days shy of 3 weeks it was fixed. Now 4 months later it has started again. I just dropped it off for its 30k service this am and will be interested to see what they find. The first several visits they just blew me off as a nut, but finally I drove straight there while it was acting up and they agreed it was a problem, still took several visits to fix and now it has started again. This car has been to the shop more in one year than my last 5 cars in their entire life span. Unless something changes it will be my first and last volvo. Hope you all have better luck. I did just get an owners satisfaction servey in the mail and can't wait to fill it out. I absolutley hate this car. Malcolm

Is it just the radio, or the whole car you hate? Just wondering.

Overall the car is OK, but the problems with the raido have essentially ruined it for me. I know a radio problem doesn't sound like much, but when you drive as much as I do the radio is important. Then add to that the number of trips to the shop especially in the first couple of months of ownership and it really doesn't make for a pleasant ownership experience. The first several trips it was obvious that virtually no attempt was made to rectify the problem. They would turn the radio on and say it seems fine and the computer shows no problem and of course within 24 hours it would be acting up again.

I just got it back from its 30k service yesterday and of course they couldn't find the problem with the radio. It was fixed for four months and has just started acting up in the past couple of weeks, but this is how it all started when it was new. In fairness to volvo all other problems have been speedily resolved and I've spoken with several other xc90 owners and none have had the problems that I have and seem very satisfied with their car. My warranty is up in 6k and I'm going today to see if I'm not to upside down in the volvo to trade for a Touraeg. Good luck with what ever you drive, Malcolm

And to think I was the only one.I've had the XC90 T6 for 11 months for which at least a whole month (in between ins and outs)has been spent at the dealer here in Florida where the car was bought: "WARREN HENRY VOLVO".The real only problem the car has had is with the Radio. It worked fine for about 4 months and suddenly in any FM radio station using it as always in Dolby PL II the sound distorts as in there was no antenna connected. The only way to try to listen would be to use it as a regular FM cheap radio.I paid for the Premiun Sound Package and all I've got from Volvo and the dealer are excuses. They said the radio should NOT work in Dolby PL II only the CD (not what the manual says),that the unit is fine even when an inspector from Volvo drove the car with me and he accepted that there was something wrong, they replaced the (?) tuner/Amplifier unit and again that everything was allright but nothing. I've wrote to Volvo headquarters and even spoke with Customer Service and nothing, not even a word from them on how to solve the problem. The next step I will take will be with my lawyer applying the LEMON LAW if possible but I won't let Volvo get away after I paid more than $45K and one thing is for sure Not one Dollar of what I gave them was bad so why should I get in return a product that does not complies.Sorry aboutexpresing myself like this on my first post in thisForum but the anger of impotence against some Car manufacturers makes me feel like this. For me also this would be My first and last Volvo.

I feel your pain brother. I've fought this battle for almost a year and went through the stage where the service people thought I was nuts to the stage where they knew there was a problem but couldn't fix it. Finally I thought it was fixed and was just starting tonot get angry every time I got in the car and low and behold it is back and once again the service people can't isolate the problem. Well I'm tired of being pissed and even though it will probably cost me several thousand dollars I'm ready for the volvo to go away. Good luck and I admire your willingness to fight with the dealer. I'm just tired of complaining to people who obviously don't feel like it is a real problem or at least don't feel like it is their problem. Malcolm, and I'll ride a bike before I drive another volvo.

Why won't they just replace the whole unit for you? Seems like with all the problems you've had, they would be willing to do it for you.

I have had a problem with the radio in my T6, as well. When I have 6 cd's loaded and listening to an FM channel, you can hear the CD's constantly shuffling around. I don't understand why it does this. Has anyone else had this problem?

Sorry to hear that you are having so many problems with the radio, I will be picking up my new XC90 on Thursday and hope not to encounter the same thing you have. If I do Volvo should just replace the radio for you free of charge.

Good Luck,

I just got my new touareg yesterday and so far so good. The xc90 is finally out of my life after a year of frustration. I encourage anyone considering a xc90 to look at the touareg, the loaded v8 is about the same price as the t6 awd and seems to be a much nicer and equally safe car. Good luck with the volvos and while I'm sure mine was the exception rather than the rule it was my first and last volvo. In the past ten years I've owned 1 honda, 1 toyota, 2 bmws, 2 gmc yukons, 2 porsches and 1 ford diesel truck and in one year the volvo was in the shop more than all of them combined. Malcolm

Sorry to hear all the problems with your XC 90 radio units

I worked as a volvo tech at a dealer in washington state for 4 yearsand had one of these come in with the same problems. After taking the car from the customer for 3 weeks i found that the fiber optic connection to the mmm module under the drivers seat had a poor factory connection to the diffuser at the end of the optic cable. Early production vehicles were known for this. check your vin to see if yours is early production. talk to gary borland if you live in the northwest, he is the fse and is smart as a tack and can help you. he has a scottish accent so listen well.

Good luck

THANK GOD I FOUND YOU !!! I have an 04 XC90 and have just begun to have problems with the radio - but the dealership thinks I'm nuts !!! Across the display on the radio has read: WARNING: Low battery. No idea what that means. Did you problems begin with any of that nature? I too have called Sweden multiple times about my XC90 - to little sympathy, support or assistance. I owned a Lexus prior to this and Lexus service and customer service is far superior to that of Volvo (I can guarantee you that Lexus wouldn't have taken the position of "if it's not happening when you bring it in for service, we don't try to fix it.")

I feel your pain with Volvo. I hope I can overcome this hurdle with the radio and be free of any further "issues". (and if I could get my third row seat to come down - it would be a happier camper.)

i wish i could say not to mock volvo but unfortunately, recently, volvo has experienced a big decrease in quality. being a 240 owner, i have an original swedish meatball and i love it. its too bad you guys are having such bad luck with ur cars because volvo used to be amazing, even in the 90's

i have a simmilar problem get absouletly crappy radio reciption on my perimum radio my 2002 ford truck gets better radio reception and it costed me 20,000 less to buy the thing it proabably does better because i has an antenna. say does anyone know where the internal antenna is on the xc90? oh and the mechanics on the volvos are great the electronics suck i just had to replace my main computer. that really hurt my pocket. ive had the 2002 ford truck and ive never had an electric or mechanical problem with it. now im not sure if this makes sense but the more you pay for soemthing the better it should work right?
