Rear shocks
 

Noted right rear leaking. ANyone chnage these? If so, could you offer some pointers on access to top mounts, any tricky steps, advice, etc?

Did some hands on research this evening, this may be of use for someone in the future.

I have a 3 row xc90. I accessed the rear shock by:

1) tucking away the third row seat
2) pulling the carpet in the same area forward to reveal the sound deadening layer
3) pulled the sound deadening layer forward as well

**another option at this point is to cut a hole in the sound deadening, but that would be less elegant.

This reveals an oval plastic cap which is glued to the top of the shock mount. Remove this, then another plastic cap, and voila, there's the top of the shock. Plan on changing it tomorrow.

The XC90 forum is slow so next time you may want to post in General Volvo Chat. Unfortunately, the top dog of the forum, Moderator Tech, has been tied up with other models and Tech can hardly visit here. Sorry for the minimal number of replies.

I'm an 850 driver and am not privy to the XC90s, but the rears are usually of shock types, means the damper and the springs are separate. If so, the task should not be too difficult. On the 850, I undo the lower attaching nut, jack up the car a little, undo the top mount and remove the shock. Upon installation, I use a torque wrench + a crow foot and torque everything to the specsfound in the service manual. If the top mount is replaceable and if you can afford it, I would replace the top mounts as well but this is not a must.

The manual (VIDA-a DVD-based manual) seems only available at places like eBay.

Alright, changing the shock took all of 5 minutes. Compressed the spring a few mm, removed top nut, removed bottom bolt, dropped shock, reverse. 5 min.

For those of you who have replaced shocks on the xc90s does it require lifting the car? I used to change Jeep shocks in the driveway and this looks simple but I wind r about clearance to get the old shock out. Thanks!
