Sticky Caliper Issue

Hello. Can anyone help please? Has anyone had a similar issue?

Issue:
  • 2018 XC90 Inscription with 50K miles
  • Drivers front caliper (only) has a mind of its own
  • Driver front caliper will gradually engage during a road trip, squeezing the pads onto the rotor
  • We all know the outcome....
    • As the rotor gets hotter it makes a louder and louder grinding sound
    • When we go to brake the steering wheel shakes - a lot
  • No codes, no check engine light, no dash lights...nothing - making this all the more mysterious
  • Volvo can't diagnose and therefore is unwilling to start replacing things without knowing for certain what is going on
  • The only "fix" I know is to hit the brakes hard for a second or two engaging the ABS making the caliper pistons move in and out several times a second
  • Once this happens the pistons seem to disengage ..., until the next time
This has been going on for months.

Thanks for any suggestions and recommendations.

did you ever figure out what this was? Have had this going on for MONTHS with my xc90. Dealer can't figure out what it is. I replaced the brake caliper that was sticking and now anotherone is doing it

More than likely a problem with the abs. It's going to be a difficult one to diagnose/fix. Sorry. (it's a very unusual problem)

The dealer could never could figure it out. But this is what I did and haven't had a problem since (currently @ 80,000 miles).

* Check out www.erievovo.com (that's not a misspelling)
* I purchased two calipers off a donor car that had 18,000 miles
* My local auto tech put my XC90 in Service Mode and swapped out both calipers
* Parts from Erie, new ceramic front pads plus labor from my guy totaled $500.00
* All Erie does is specialize in Volvo parts
* Most Erie listings have pics - which I found helpful
* Erie will deal on price, but not a lot.

Good luck!
