White Smoke from 04 XC90 HELP!!!
I am a brand new member. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
I have a 04 Volvo xc90. It has 84,000ish miles. The vehicle has been maintained per Volvo's recommendations. All of the oil either leaked or burnt out of my car. I added 4 quarts of oil. When I started the engine, LOTS of white smoke started billowing out of the tail pipe. Only AFTER I added the oil and started the engine did I get a check engine light. There is also a faint whiny noise coming from the engine which I just noticed. Do you have any idea what this could be? Please HELP!!!! |
I am assuming you have the T6 engine.
OK first of all you didn't over fill the engine with oil right??? If the oil level keeps dropping, after running for a short time, you might want to look at your turbos. Is the white smoke very thick?? Does it smell like oil?? You will need to remove all the piping from the turbos, and check them, if one or both went out it can pumps lot of oil into the exhaust. |

I don't have a turbo engine. And no, I didn't overfill it.

What engine do you have then?? |
Ok, It seems I do have the smaller turbo engine. Demonstrated by my dilemma, It's pretty obvious that my knowledge of engines in general is limited, at best. Since my initial post, The oil pan cover has been taken off and the oil drained from the car. We are waiting on a wrench to remove the oil filter. The oil pan cover is saturated in oil on the left side. What do you think about that? Thank you for your help.

Did you ever figure out what your problem was.

How about drive the car and see if the oil smoke goes away? If you overfilled the engine - that oil will get into the exhaust and will take some time to burn off.

white smoke from overfilling the oil? Here I was thinking we got a new Pope :-)

if you did overfill, its possible you damaged a seal or the PCV oil separator.
