XC90 Running Boards - Practical, or just cosmetic?

Hi,
I'm trying to decide whether or not to order my XC90 with running boards. I would rather not have people step on the car body to access the roof rack. I have seen the running boards in pictures but not in real life. They look a bit narrow to me, and I am thus wondering how helpful they are in accessing the roof rack. What is your experience? Are they practical, or just cosmetic?
Thanks,
- Oliver

I bought a used 2006 xc90 V8 that already had them on. I think they look great, and they do help to reach the roof. But it makes it so incredibly awkward to get into the xc90. Either you stretch way out from the ground and kind of slide in, or you step on the running board and grab the "holy **** handle" to kind of crouch in. I'm average height 5'9". My friend who's 6'4" doesn't have a problem stepping in from the ground though. I like the look and won't take them off since they are already there, but I wouldn't get them again.
