Default What part is this?

I have determined that the rattling sound I have on my 2002 Volvo s40 is because of a corroded heat shield. It must be replaced. The shield fits over the muffler. I am not sure what it is called. Would it be the muffler heat shield?

I think that owing to its position over the muffler, it is not an exhaust manifold heat shield; I just need a name.

Then I must order a replacement.

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Respectfully,

N-J, On the Gen 1 S40s there are several heat shields guarding the body from the turbo and exhaust system. You'd need to use a parts diagram on a dealer web site like OEM Volvo Parts | VolvoWholesalePartsDirect.com to ID which one is corroded. Most are just held on by a few bolts so you may be able to fabricate a washer solution to grab onto more metal if the bolt has pulled through.

Are they protecting the passenger compartment from the engine's heat or are they there say to prevent a fire if you park your Volvo over a tall pile of dry leaves?

Also, is this heat shield really necessary regardless of it use. Whenever I take my car to a professional mechanic (3 times in the last two weeks). All they say is just to take that heat shield off - permanently. When I respond that it must be there for a reason they respond no it is not. The US government makes Volvo put them on. That is why they are on and nothing more.

Any thoughts on this?

Guard plates engine compartment exhaust system. Fits: 2002 Volvo | Volvo Wholesale Parts Direct gives a picture. The various parts range in price from 40 to 120. I suppose you could also shop at a Recycle yard to save a few bucks. Personally, I'm not a fan of deleting something that was engineered and put there for a purpose.
