Power Steering Fluid Info + Flush Info
Hi, do any of you know specifically which Pentosin power steering fluid is the right one for an 02 s80? I have heard that there are 3 or so different varieties and I was wondering which was the right one to use..
Next, I am planning to install an inline magnefine filter on the power steering line, but I decided it would be the ideal time to swap out the fluid. What method would you all reccomend? Just siphoning the fluid out of the bottle and replacing with fresh (performing this procedure 2 or 3 times) or possible disconnecting the outlet hose and connecting a clear plastic hose to drain the system (while pouring fresh power steering fluid in)
What do you think is the best way and how much fluid can I expect to need?
Thanks

Nah, ATF isnt reccomended on these cars.. supposedly cause the seals on the rack to leak...
I know there are a few pentosins CHF 202 is one of them, (silver bottle blue writing)
Then there is the pentosin CHF 11S (green bottle)
There is also Pentosin CHF 7.1 (silver bottle, green writing)
I seriously dont know which is the right one...

I think it was CHF 11s. I do not recall if this is the most recent specification as what ever was originally in my 2002 S80 has since been upgraded. It is not ATF, the manual is wrong. Pentosin CHF 7.1 or CHF 202 is either the predecessor or sucessor to CHF 11s, the other one is not what you want. Call around and go to the auto parts store. The bottle will tell you which one succeded the other and the third is odd man out. It is green.
Good luck

Well the thing is, I can get the pentosin as cheap as about $14 or $15 per bottle, I just needed to know which was the right one.. I would consider calling up the stealership, but they woul tell me to "only use genuine Volvo power steering fluid" and we all know how that goes....
If any of you know which is the right one, will be much appreciated..
Thanks

Thanks tech, if you can just verify on Tuesday I will appreciate greatly..
I was looking at the way the bottle is designed.. Where would you reccomend I put the in-line filter? On the lower pressure upper line leading into the top of the bottle? This seems MUCH easier than going for the lower line..

In a 2002 S80 they put in CHF 11s but CHF 202 is the upgrade and I think it is what my dealer uses/recomends. Do not use CHF 7.1

Took a look at my fluid today, and while it doesnt look particularly dirty, i did observe that it is a sort of brown with a slight golden look to it.. this is the opposite of what i was expecting seeing as the power steering fluid is normally blue or green or one of those types of colours....
Also interesting is that the manual says that its fine to use ATF in the power steering system.. something that I thought supposedly causes seals to leak..
Capacity is .9l so I guess two bottles of pentosin fluid should do the trick by whatever means I decide to use..

Called up FCP and they confirmed CHF 202 is the right fluid.. I ordered two bottles for about $16 each including shipping...
Im a bit worried though because if I lock the wheel all the way to the right, I get a sort of grinding noise almost.. and its not the wheels rubbing, sounds like the power steering pump to me, so i'll handle that flush ASAP

well, I know about the rubbing at full lock, that happens sometimes with the car but thats just bad steering stops, ive experienced that before.. but this is something new with the car and only when locking full right...
As soon as that fluid arrives im going to handle a flush and see if it helps.. I really hope its not my pump or rack or something expensive goin bad..

Confused....
Everyone I ask says not to use ATF but my owner's manual, under power steering fluid type, says ATF. I'm confused, I really don't wanna pay over $20 for a bottle of Pentosin. Oh yeah, my car is an '02 S80 29. Anyone else drive this car? If so, what fluid do you use?

i did this a couple days ago if it helps anyone
jacked up the car and removed the return line and added a splice and a clear tube to a bucket
you turn the wheels 20 or 30 times and it pumps everything out
and with the line still in the bucket start adding the green 11S
there is also a 202 version which works but its not as good and there is a 7.1 DO NOT USE on anything newer than 1999 and in that case just use ATF fluid
it will take 1 can but if you want to rly flush the system get 2
have someone start the car as you add fluid till it runs clear and green re connect the hoses and your good repeat the rotation of the steering wheel 20 times to work out the bubbles
