Default 2011 V50 1.6D2 Estate. cranks but does not start

Hello All; Pointer required with this.I have a 2011 V50 1.6 D2 Diesel Estate car, engine number starts with E4.
The engine started and ran for approx. 3 seconds and cut out. Since then it has only cranked, never a hint of a start. I have checked all the engine management fuses and fuel pump fuse. I swapped the engine management relay with no joy. In putting the key in to position 11 should I hear the electric fuel pump run?....I don't.
At first I thought that the immobiliser had operated , but then if this is so the engine would not have run for 3 seconds.... or would it? I get no messages on the dash board. The engine management light did come on , but did clear when I disconnected the battery whilst checking the fuse box inside the car.
I have no access to a code reader, and don't know what system one operates on... apparently there are 2. Haynes manuals don't include the 1.6 Diesel version. Advise would be really helpful Thank you. Mick

Just an up date, finally got the codes read and low fuel pressure is the fault. Further checking revealed the pump in the tank is not running!! To change this it is a tank out job!!!, there is an access hole under the rear seats which does not access the pump/sender unit, just the cable passing through. Cost of new pump/sender unit, new plastic lock ring and seal is £340... bit of a shock, did expect to have got more than 80,000 mls from the original makers part. have gone with this as don't want to remove tank again.

New pump fitted and no joy!!!!!. Just the same. So now looking for a cable fault, there is evidence that mice had started to build a nest in the engine compartment.....The joy of living in the countryside. Mick McM

Hi, yes did get sorted. There is no fuel pump in the tank, despite the spares dept telling me that it was a pump sender unit in tank. New cost me almost £300. The pump is as I recollect engine driven. The problem was the suction hoses, (hence no leakage). Check all the hoses in the engine bay for minor /major abrasion, perishing, (in my case Mouse attack.)new set of hoses are expensive. To prove it is not another prob hang a can of fuel on bonnet and pipe itin to pump suction, from filter.
when you find hose leak, I would suggest an oil resistant hose and 2 jubilee clips.
hope this helps Mick McM
