Default 1987 740 turbo in take fuel pump useless with over a half tank?

Hey guys,

I am pretty sure that my in tank fuel pump isn't working.... i pulled the fuse for it... tried to start it and there was no change in how the car was reacting. It was just about turning over, but not staying started.... there are some pops and backfire kind of things.

So... i have a new one, but it is raining cats and dogs out here.... I feel like I have read somewhere that if the tank is over 1/2 full that the main fuel pump renders the in tank one useless.... that it will draw all it needs...

Is this true????????

If it is then hopefully I can just fill up the tank and move the car....

Thanks!

Can someone do me a favour? If you have a full tank of gas.... can you remove fuse number 11 and see if the car will start?

Just want to see if it will start without the intank fuel pump running.

I would... but my car is not home right now...
I dont know if it will work...
The key to 2 postion engauges the intake pumpright, which charges the main one...?
I can't think right now.

I am not to sure if it will work either... the in tank fuel pump is on a seperate fuse from the main one....

The in tank fuel pump is a low pressure one... just to aid getting fuel to the main pump.... the main one pressurizes the line properly.....

Theoretically it should work... as long as there is enough fuel in the tank.... gah, I should just change the intank fuel pump.... I am just being lazy cause I will have to do it in the rain HEHE

Your theory seems logical captian.....
Makes sence, but I guess it will have to be changed eventually.

Yes if the intank pump is bad and you have over 1/2 tank it will run fine. The pressure of the fuel in the tank will make it still run fine.
After you get to 1/2 or below it will start acting up. Alot of times if it is bad and you are below 1/2 to 1/4 going around corners can even make the car stumble.

Depends on how the intank pump fails. If you want to move it I would put the fuze back in and try.

Default In-tank fuel pump replacement

Does anyone have instructions on how to change the in-tank fuel pump on a 1987 740 turbo station wagon?

fcp groton (link on right side of this forum) has pumps for about as reasonable a price as anywhere, and they co-sponsor this forum...

you might look here for some tips on servicing it.

Linked on that last page is this very useful detailed photo blog of the job.... Volvo Fuel Tank Pump/Sender Replacement

if you have a wagon, that access plate is under the floor plate thats behind the back seat and forward of the double panel that covers the spare tire. IIRC, I had to remove like 3 nuts, then those sections just lifted out exposing the access plate to this.

Its a real contortion job to extract the pump assembly, and get it back in. if you get the ring off and aren't going to reassemble it the same day, I highly recommend putting the clamp on the ring and tightening it, this prevents the ring from 'stretching' such that it won't stay on when you reinstall everything (DAMHIK,IJD).
