Loud Squeal/whine
my 2001 V70 develops a head-turning loud whine after about 45 minutes of driving. I have invested in a new timing belt, pulley, water pump, serpentine belt, power steering fluid flush and refill...nothing has solved the problem. When it is at it's loudest, there is a fluctuation in idle rpm. also noticed if I put it in neutral and rev engine it goes away until I start driving again. Any ideas?

You might need to "invest" in a mechanic's stethoscope..... a section of garden hose about 2 feet long. Alternator, power steering pump can be isolated to hear if that's the source of the noise. Maybe you can isolate it without using the hose, but those two items might be getting too hot, suffer failing bearings, or in the case of the alternator, overload. I'd start with these.
Or, one of the new parts is misaligned, not properly tightened, or slipping.
The stethoscope will help isolate the noise source if its at these locations, too.
I'm suggesting this because its cheap. Besides, I use mine to fill my power washer with RV antifreeze in the fall so the pump housing won't freeze and crack.
