help with loud squeal
Hello, I am new to this forum and in need of some help from those with knowledge. I do not have any.
My 1988 Volvo 240 DL has an incredibly loud squeal when started. As the voltmeter increases, the squeal mellows out and eventually disappears. I have replaced the alternator belt and the power steering belt, checked all the fluid levels, and still continue to have this problem. This did not occur until I drove the car through a large water puddle. The day after this event, the alternator belt was thrown from the car. Are all these events related? Is it most likely my alternator? I have heard of this whine also occurring in instances where the ac compressor is faulty or bad. any help?

The compressor is possible. Remove the A/C belt and see if the pulley moves easily.
Also make sure all the accessories are lined up correctly. The bushings might be bad keeping something on an angle causing the belt to squeel.
