How to clear Service Engine Light - thanks Tech!
Got my oil changed yesterday, but the dealership didn't know how to get the service light to go off (it was a chrysler dealership owned by my wife's family which isn't all that happy i'm driving a volvo LOL) - i told them NP, that i knew how - followed the instructions that were posted by tech on either the 850 or the V70 forum
1. turn key to Pos I
2. Hold in the odometer reset button while turning key to Pos II and continue to hold in the button until the 'service engine light begins to blink'
3. Once it blinks 3 times, return key to Pos 0 (I removed key *optional*)
4. Service Engine light should be reset now - start the car up to verify the 'Service Engine light' is reset.
* from previous posts I wasn't sure if after the blinking you just start the car or return the key to Pos 0, so i thought i'd post this to clarify. Also at the blinking stage, the light will continue to blink, i think i counted 6 or 7 times. Not sure if you have to catch it on the 3rd blink or not, but I did and got the light to reset.

For the 98, you will need a Draper 69007 tool. Draper sells them for £89, but there is also an eBay.co.uk vendor who many of the volvoforums members have bought them from for £29.
There's also this post in one of the SAAB forums where someone is selling a used one for £15.

Taking the bulb out means the stupid light will never come on again. Otherwise you either have to buy a special tool to reset it or take it to the dealer or somebody who can reset it. It only stays on for a minute so on my 98 it's just on. I only removed the bulb on the 97 when I had the instrument cluster out to fix the oddometer.

That's the one. I tried 2 years ago to buy one from 'justoffbase' and after 3 months cancelled because they had no stock. Check stock level first!!
Draper apparently don't make too many in any year because they are now considered old equipment. Somebody should tell them that Volvos go on forever.

I tried the above steps and it didn't work. Then tried releasing the trip before returning the key to "0", and it worked. I have a 2000 V70 XC SE.
1. turn key to Pos I
2. Hold in the odometer reset button while turning key to Pos II and continue to hold in the button until the 'service engine light begins to blink'
3. Once it blinks 3 times, release the trip button, then return key to Pos 0 (I removed key *optional*)
4. Service Engine light should be reset now - start the car up to verify the 'Service Engine light' is reset.

I bought my 98 Volvo S70 about a year ago and have gone through the whole car and love my Volvo. My problem is no matter what I try the Service light will not go out. Also have done research on how to do it and it just does not reset. Is there something I am doing wrong? Tried holding the odometer reset in position I and the postion II and it never blinks for me.

I have 2000 Volvo V70. It took some trouble shooting, but it works. I didn't release the odometer button after it started blinking and it didn't reset the button. So make sure to release the odometer button before you move the key from position II to O.
