If the timing belt came off you the car will need a valve job to replace the bent exhaust valves. Given the car's value and cost to repair, I'd say this is clearly not a parts car and would be worth fixing the top end. I think you can take "new timing belt kit" off the list of parts installed :-)

Thanks. It's easy to like Volvos' Your repair tip is encouraging. I've just checked my car and the timing belt did not come off, not broken either. But a bit loose.
The engine turns but no start ; there was an odd "backfire" sound though.

There is some hope then! Its possible the timing belt has slipped a notch or two which can cause the no start condition. You can have a compression test done to see if there's any compression or have an inspection cam look for bent valves or ding marks on the pistons. If there is some compression (if the timing is off, there will be some loss of compression but not all) you can have the valve timing checked and reset to see if that restores the engine back to normal. This may cost you a few hours of shop time unless you can do the basic testing yourself. Note that for a turbo engine, the compression should be in the 150 PSI range and my guess is you'd need something over 100 for the engine to start. If you see something like 60-80 PSI across the board then I'd look into having the timing reset (unless the cam shows valve or piston damage ).
