99 V70 - 2 dead cylinders
Accidentally bought a 99 V70 with the 2.4 and 197,000 miles - partner bid on the wrong car. It has two cylinders not firing (2&3). I changed around coil packs and plugs, but the problem is definitely in these two cylinders. I puled the plugs and coils and fired up the car, and they both have spark. I have a ton of codes pulled from the scanner: 3503, 3523, 3533, 3502, 3522, 3532. The engine does not sound bad (no knocking or death rattle). I assume the problem is in the fuel delivery system, but why would 2 injectors go bad at the same time? Any other ideas or place to look? Car is in nice shape for the miles, and I hate to scrap without knowing for the problem for sure.
Thanks for any help or advice. Paul |
Before going any further, remove all of the spark plugs and unplug all of the coils. Do a quick compression test. You may have some bent valves if the timing belt was done wrong or has jumped time.
I seriously doubt that injectors are bad. I've never changed an injector in a Volvo, so check for compression. |

I took your advice and the result was not good - 3 cylinders had about 70 psi, but the two dead cylinders had ZERO. I guess it is $9 per 100 pounds for this good looking wagon! Paul |
I wouldn't toss it away. Pull the cylinder head. You can buy valves for these engines pretty cheap. I bet the valves are bent.
Have a local machine shop tighten up the head. It is worth more running. |
