another rough idle thread
Ok, so let me start by saying I've read just about every rough idle thread I could find on here and thought I had an idea on which direction to go with my issue...
1999 V70xc 2.4T
symptoms:
Rough idle ONLY after a long haul up a mountain or driving all day in stop & go city streets.
After the rough idle starts, it will run extremely rich (looks like a diesel) whenever you use the accelerator.
It will fall on it's face, sputtering and cutting out while trying to get up to speed, and then when you go to stop, the power brake booster runs out of vacuum after the second pedal press.
the ETS light comes on occasionally.
I called volvo to find out if the ETM was replaced under recall, and they said it was done in 2008. I've seen a lot of instances where cleaning the throttle body had helped, but low and behold, the throttle body is for the most part clean. (not at all dirty enough to act like it is.)
Any other ideas? It seems to be running rich with the symptoms of a vacuum leak, and I'm stumped!
*going back out to clean the MAF, ETM, and any other sensor I can find, and searching for more bad vacuum lines.
Let me know your thoughts, and I'll give my results, thanks!

You're probably closer than you think to an answer and solution. The power brake booster is your clue. In a manner of speaking, Volvo design and engineering is practical and logical. It's easy to "over-think" things when dealing with these cars, I have learned. Every service task I have undertaken on my Volvo cars has always been harder in my head than the actual process of doing the task.
The ETM issue with these models were prone to trouble until Volvo fixed it. Never overlook or neglect the rubber and plastic parts on the intake system of these models. Little vacuum hose leaks can result in major issues causing failure in other components. Check your intake bellows and all vacuums lines at the throttle body.

I replaced all of the vacuum lines I could find, and I hooked a smoke machine up with no apparent leaks. The thing that gets me is it drives like it's lean, and tgeres no vacuum like theres an intake leak, but it will DUMP fuel when it starts acting up.
