Default Bad Cat...replacement source?

So on a recent trip my 1999 XC70 Wagon started losing power...and eventually I had to stop. Turns out the cats are shot and have severely clogged my exhaust system.

New cats are insane...like $1800. Any ideas where I can get cheaper? What about used? Also, what if I cut them out, hollow and replace? Will car run right?

Its a good old car but not worth dropping a grand or more into for exhaust work. Any ideas/leads greatly appreciated.

Thx!

gz

If you can find a used one it will work fine. Most salvage yards chop them out to sell off the platinum. If you aren't in California check the price on a Magnaflow.

I replaced the cat on my 2000 V70 with an aftermarket Bosal, something similar to this : Volvo Catalytic Converter (V70) - Bosal 099-1974 | FCP Euro . It's been about 10 months & I've had zero issue with it. The fitment was spot on as well. Hope that helps?
