Default Engine warning-tappets- V70

Proud owner of a V70 2.4 auto classic yr 2000, full spec, last of the real V70's and a beautiful effortless all-purpose drive. Love it.
However over the last month the engine warning light comes on intermittently. I've taken it straight to the garage and the man clears the light and says it is a VVT fault probably to do with hydraulic tappet pressures (?), and I should wait until I get some real symptoms they can cure.
Now I am only moderately oily, but my feeling is that Volvo would not put a sensor on something non-critical to the function of the engine and it is there to safegaurd it, and my wallet. Occasionally I take the other view and credit the garage man for dancing around the truth that a fix may be more expensive than a 15 year old car !
Any thoughts gratefully recieved, thanks in advance.

PS I'm now away for 10 days and won't be able to reply, sorry.
