Default Looking to buy, need some help.

In the market for a new (to me) car, looked at a 1998 V70 Cross Country AWD today. Very nice car, I love wagons and Volvo seems to do it right. Everything seemed in order to me, but the seller, who is a small independent dealer, did not get any service records when they bought the car and the only thing on Carfax is a recall for some sort of electronic switch.

This is worrying to me, as I do not know if or when the timing belt has been changed, or what else has been done. I have read that the AWD and transfer case can be an issue on these cars so it is worrying to me that he has no service records.

Can anyone give some tips on a way to tell if these things have been done (if possible)? And any other information/known issues with the V70 XC would be very helpful. New to these forums and hopefully here to stay.

The engine bay *looked* clean and well maintained. The car has ~160,000 miles and ran and drove smoothly when I test drove it. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks all.

Try to find out where the car came from by asking the dealer where it was titled if multiple right it all down then ask for the vin. Then call the dealers in the area if which it was registers and ask them for help if the car was serviced there and tell them you don't need owner info just service history. They most likely will tell you what was done and if its been to multiple places call everyone and ask. You should find all the records.
