2005 xc70
There are many possible solutions short of a trans replacement. Fluid change (with the correct fluid) would be a good first start. Then a valve body replacement MIGHT solve your problem.
There will be others that will mention rebuilding solenoids, or other solutions. And yes some of those will be viable.

I had the same problem on my 2005 xc70. I just changed the solenoid and it solved my problem. Now the shifter gets stuck in park. Sometimes for awhile or
for a long time. I finally pulled out that side panel on driver side . I just stuck my had in there and reach for a spring and I pull it back a lil or twist it. And it gets unstuck. Too many drink have spilt on that consul. I have to clean it. It sticky. Not the Solenoid change fixed my hard shift and thump. I saved $3000 dollars. I know it’s been a long time 2023… I hope you’ve fixed it since then.
