Default replace fuel pump... DRAIN GAS FIRST

Unless you are a pro mechanic with a shop, I'd do it my way. A) raise the car securely, tires six inches above the ground, to remove the plastic gas tank shield on the passneger side (that's the fuel pump side... the gas tank is doubled, shaped like kidneys. The other side supposedly contains, through an identical access port , "a sending unit".... I DIDN'T TOUCH IT AND THE SENDING UNIT THAT CAME WITH THE PUMP IS WORKING WITH BOTH THE GAGE AND THE COMPUTER TYPE NUMBERS THAT SHOW M.P.G., ETC. B) before draining the gas USING A "COLD CHISEL" I in thirty minutes hammer/chiseled out the relatively soft mallable METAL AREA TOWARD THE FRONT OF THE FUEL PUMP, about 9" high and 7" wide...maybe don't cut all of the very top edge, just bend it away FOR easier refitting later. But you may want to consult a Volvo Pro, after I drained mine by loosening the LOCK RING OF THE FUEL PUMP i was told THAT the pro website "alltold??" says that the gas can be removed via the fuel rail.... The car has to be raised sufficiently to have room for draining safely...I USED A THE FLAT END OF A 8" FILE AND LIGHT HAMMERING TO LOOSEN IT ONE NOTCH AT A TIME AFTER 1/3 TURN of the 4" diameter lockring the GAS STARTS DRIBBLING, I think one gallon per hour approximately, after loosening it a full three turns THE REAR OF THE CAR MUST BE HIGHER THAN THE FRONT in order to limit the gas from running to the back of the bottom of the tank...THERE IS NO DANGER OF SPRAYING AS THE GAS IS NOT PRESSURIZED.. Dribbling along the bottom of the front of the tank a large soda bottle sliced lengthwise at an angle with a three inches wide and one inch beyond the bottle's edge extra shield was enough to control it all into two 5 gallon cans (2.5 gallon cans may be easier to control... supposedly my wife had just filled up but I only got 10 gallons, not 18.... some must have stayed in the other "kidney")
C) Once the gas stops dribbling, level the car, in order to avoid a small accidental spill when actually removing the old pump. D) The fuel lines are to be popped off "studs" by pushing up the INNER BLACK PART with a tool that has a U shaped part which slides under the black part of the fitting AND YOU PUSH THAT UP WHILE HOLDING FIRMLY THE METAL END OF THE FUEL LINE... THE BLACK PART SLIDES UP A BIT , THEN THE WHOLE THING POPS/PULLS OFF.
E) BE CAREFUL TO GUIDE IN THE RUBBER GASKET OF THE NEW PUMP, I used a thin metal artists paint knife without sharp edges, that way avoiding risking damage cutting that gasket .

"Drain the gas tank?".... ok, ok, it does not have to BE DRAINED, just the level brought down below the bottom edge of the pump gasket. And when pulling the pump; be aware that the pump will contain about six oz. of fuel.... thus be prepared with a container to catch it outside the door.... I think that it flows out only when you turn the pump..Plus, there will be one oz. of fuel in the concave end of the pump prior to pulling it. have a rag or two paper napkins to blot it up.
