02 V70 Boost Pod Install
I was looking at the different mounting options for a boost pod online (top of dash, air vent, a-pillar, etc.) I tried the IPD kit and was not happy at all. So I decided to fabricate my own and share it here. I went to the junk yard and bought a cluster bezel for $5, so if I wrecked it I would still have my original to put back. You'll need a gauge, I chose the same as IPD because I liked that one, VDO online $30 shipped. Home Depot p/u Ice maker installation hose $3 and two brass adapters (1/8 NPT) for the ends $6, and a brass coupling (1/8 NPT) $3. Autoparts store 5/16 vacuum tee $3. You'll also need a short peice of 2" PVC pipe, epoxy, fiberglass and bondo. Figure out the angle nessecary to cut the PVC so that the back of the pipe tapers down to meet the back of the bezel and front of the cluster as not to block any lights or gauges, this may take a few tries to find what your happy with. You'll also need to decide the length that it protrudes from the bezel as to accomodate the gauge properly without interfering with the function of the steering column. You'll need to sand the inside of the pipe lightly until your gauge fits in snug but not too loose, this will be all that holds it in place in the end. Next draw the outline of the PVC on the bezel where you want to mount it. Then using a dremel tool with the steel saw tooth wheel cut the bezel as marked, leave the little piece of the bezel that is across the front of the bezel above the steering column, we'll cut this out latter but for now we need it to keep the proper shape of the bezel. Now you can epoxy the PVC to the bezel, don't spare it, I found that any flexing later will lead to cracking in the bondo, however bear in mind that anything on top of the bezel needs to be sanded smooth after it is covered with bondo. Now you can cut off the last piece of the bezel below the PVC above the steering column. I cut a small piece of PVC to super glue to the front bottom of the PVC above the steering column to fill in the void below. Next you should use fiberglass where the PVC meets the bezel on top ( I did not do this in the pictures and found that the bondo cracked later, I'll be redoing that this week). Next apply bondo in thin coats sand as needed to blend the PVC into the bezel. Prime the entire bezel and PVC (2 coats) then paint in your choice of colors ( I used Flat Black ). Follow the instructions from IPD as far as running the hose and wiring the light. I found that the ice maker line was far superior to the line used by IPD, you can paint it black if you don't like it clear under the hood. I could not find a vacuum tee that was 5/16 with 1/8 NPT so I amde it by epoxying the 1/8 coupling to the 5/16 tee, you'll need to sand the barbs off a little to fit the coupling on. Never posted pix before hope it works properly.
