I have had my 2003 V70 D5 automatic since new and it has been serviced by the main Volvo agent the whole time but a few months ago it stopped changing gear automatically. It would start off in first gear but not go up into second or any higher gears. The Volvo agent said the cost of repair was more than the car is worth but I could continue shifting gear manually. It has now stopped changing manually so I am restricted to first gear only, I do have another car that I can drive but rather like the Volvo. My local garage that services my old Nissan pickup says that an oil or filter change might cure the problem, I am reluctant to throw money at it but might this or another cheap procedure work.
