2010 V70 A/C Compressor
Hey all, We have a 2010 V70 with approximately 150,000 miles. Our A/C compressor has gone out and is in need of being swapped out for a working unit. Volvo has verified this repair is needed and instead of paying them $1,300+ for the job, I plan to tackle it myself. I have a few questions:
- Is this a decent guide to doing the job?
- Do you have to use a genuine Volvo product or are there any aftermarket recommendations?
- Outside of the compressor are there any additional components that need to be swapped to ensure the system will function properly?
- I plan to take it to someone to professionally evacuate and service the system prior to and after the installation is completed. Could any qualified A/C technician do this service or do you recommend a specialized Volvo mechanic?
- I like to work on my vehicles, but have never done an A/C job. How difficult is something like this?

who did the diagnosis on the AC compressor? did they determine if its a clutch issue or did the compressor itself fail? If you are lucky its just the clutch which can be replaced on some models without opening the system. Are you sure there isn't a leak or a wonky sensor?
If its the compressor, you can find reman units online. The complexity for the install is what needs to be removed to access the unit. The other question is what else should be serviced once the system is opened (ie new receiver/dryer, orifice valve, o-rings etc - not sure of the design on your year but that would be something to ask the shop who'd do the evac/fill for you. Totally agree with having a professional shop do the recharge.
