which motor oil to use ? V70 R
I have just gotten a 2004 V70 R , and i want to change the oil.
I have another car in which i use Mobil 1 Euro 5W 40 oil
I would like to use the same , so that i don't have 2 different oils on hand, etc
the car has 147,000 mile but consumes very little oil
i am torn between Euro 5W 40 and similar High Mileage Blend
any thoughts would be appreciated
the car is in Colorado where temps range from -10 to 100

The owners manual recommends 5-30, 10-30 or 5-40 synthetic depending driving conditions so I'd say 5-40 is a good choice for you.
As to brand, its not a brand thing as much as a API specification set: Meeting or exceeding ILSAC specification GF-2, including ACEA A1, API SJ, SJ/CF, and SJ/Energy Conserving.
So look at the jugs of oil and see if it meets these specs or google for your brand. I would not bother with a blend (part dino/part synth) but I would consider using a high mileage synthetic as they have seal softeners which are helpful for older cars. If there are no maintenance records on whether the car has synthetic in it or not, you may want to transistion using a high mileage blend to make sure the seals are in good shape. PS I use high mileage synthetic in my son's 2000 S40 (usually a premium brand like Castrol/Pennzoil/Quaker etc) and I use Castrol Edge in my 2012.

I have a 2004 V70R with 143,000 miles on it. I've owned it 6 years, and have ONLY used Mobil1 which the previous posting failed to mention. I put Mobil1 in all my cars(3) and lawn mowers; it is cheap insurance.
Mobil 1 is a family of products so you might as well read up on what's what. I believe the Mobil 1 FS X2 is the "euro 5w40". That shows it meets the API SN spec (thus exceeding SJ which is an older standard). A good sign is VW also tested/approved - since they also use lots of aluminum bits like the Volvos.

PS lots of online posts/articles on Mobil 1 vs Castrol Edge. Biggest take away from all the bla bla bla is to choose the right product for your car or truck. If you choose the right product for your car, follow the factory guidance for viscosity and change interval, use the correct OEM filter the final choice of Mobil, Castrol, Quaker, Pennzoil, Amsoil etc doesn't really matter as they all exceed the car's requirements, even if Volvo recommends Castrol.

yes, it can be very confusing, i wonder why the have so many variants of the same product
i think the car will outlast me, and another confusing thing is how long to leave the oil in before changing
in the old days, you changed oil every year, because of a buildup of acids, not sure that happens with
synthetics

Actually that is why there are different products. The formulas will try to avoid components and additives that may bother certain metals and seals common to the vehicles mentioned in the guidance. For a good example, some manual transmissions with spec only GL4 since some of the components in GL5 products can damage brass synchro rings... Also keep in mind, in old days people considered a 100K mile engine worn out (I've kept my last two cars (Audi, Volvo) both for 250K+ miles plus doing regular oil changes and our Highlander is getting close so I tend not to overthink the choices and just keep to the schedule using quality OEM filters.
