Safe to drive on a 12 year timing belt?
I just bought a 2004 V70 with 109,000 kilometers and it hasn't had its timing belt done yet. I am wondering if it is safe to drive the 40 mins in rush hour traffic to the shop that is servicing the vehicle? Is the belt so old that it is due to snap?

I never go by looks on a timing belt. I have pulled the cover and the belt looked great, a week later the belt gave out. Never again. Different manufacturer belts last longer than others too. I have seen honda belts last upwards of 200k miles. Then I have seen certain GM models last about 30k miles. If I was worried I would probably just have AAA tow it for me. Best of luck

You can inspect the belt for cracks and frays - as well as the serpentine belt. Often its the idlers that wear out that causes the belts to go or a serpentine belt that goes and jams into the timing belt. I'd pull the timing cover to look for any cracks/frays in the belt, and for any oil or coolant leaks as a first step.
