Transmission troubles: '06 2.4 5-sp manual
Hello all,
This started as a question how to inspect my timing belt. Bought an 06 2.4 5 sp manual transmission 96k miles, not running with a history of whining and other transmission problems. Clutch replaced 2 years ago at 65k miles.
I checked the timing belt visually, it is intact and looks OK. Still, only a "click:" when I turned the key to start the engine. Here's what I've done:
1) Charged battery fully with trickle charger
2) Turned key, got "click"
3) Decided to take starter out and have tested at Autozone; sometimes it would spin, sometimes it would just click. Decided to buy rebuilt starter for $139
4) Installed rebuilt starter, turned key, got click again (sparter will not spin and engine will not turn over).
Questions for moving forward:
1) Is there a way in which a manual transmission can fail that will prevent the flywheel from spinning?
2) Any other theories as to why engine seems frozen?
3) As I am looking at a failed manual transmission, any suggestions for reputable dismantlers who might have a used transmission to install? Dealer wants $5k for the job, and I hear that the 5-speed unit is generally reliable.
4) Other thoughts?
Thank you for your help,
Jeff in Boston
