V70 Screeching sound short period when starting up.
Hi everyone, Newbie to here and Just need some advice please,
We have a Volvo V70 2011 model Mk3 D3 Diesel 2.0 Auto
When starting up also when turning steering to any lock or even reversring, this screeching metalic noise kicks off
but seems to vanish while driving until either turning to a lock side as in driving into like a parking space Or if turning wheels to a lock side while reversing. The Reservoir level is fine with no bubbles inside as I check that weekly.
Not always present all the time but I am uncertain if this is the steering pump or power steering pump relief valve Or something else.
I was unable to sort how to add a video on this site so uploaded this for you to view.
that sounds like two pieces off spinning metal meeting and sliding against each other, Power steering pump usually is more high pitched and you'll usually start experiencing momentary losses of power steering on your turns, not too mention fluid loss, because a bad pump, if s not seized up (which would be glaringly obvious) will be leaking, so your fluid typically starts going low.
However,, I'm looking at vida right now, and if yours is a D5204T2 engine, it has this to say
so I suppose I have no idea what it would sound like.
maybe you'll get lucky and have someone nearby. I can almost guarantee it's throwing something on the CAN, LIN , or MOST networks that would tell you what's going on.

Hi and thanks for your reply, Yes Engine is a D5204T2.
I wasn't and still not certain if PAS pump or Alternator pulley clutch was having issues causing this noise, strange that it occurs on engine starting up then just stops after about 8-15 secs. Also the headlights dim when turning on to full lock which I gathered was an Alternator issue so thought it could be that, but again not sure.
I have VIDA but there's nothing that I can find that I understand this as I thought VIDA will only provide details on electronic information while this maybe mechanical.
I did think of using a long thin screwdriver to touch various bodies to feel if there is a vibration through it, as we had a stethoscope type unit in the garage we used for similar , but this was yrs ago.
Can I ask you what secetion would need to be opened on VIDA to see if this issue is shown through it's report, eg; run VIDA then start vehicle to seee if this opns a list or item of a problem / cause and cure. I can also upload pictures of VIDA reports if this can help me finding it out.
Regards

Reason: More info
do you have a DICE or vxdiag Or some other passthru device that you can hook up to your car so you can run the diagnostics in VIDA on your car?
sure it's mechanical, but volvo's (and most modern cars now..) have sensors out the whazoo, as well as everything is controlled by electronics. there's a module for everything in volvos.
ok, diagnosing the old fashioned way, what I would try is with the Car off, putting a socket on one of the nuts of any of those wheels and turn it and see if any of the pulleys or wheels don't spin with the belt when it's being driven. or, loosen the belt and try all the pulleys individually and see if any are locked up or feel like they're on their way to seizing. that should help you narrow it down.
if you find one, give it a good blast with wd 40 or something (don't get it on your belts though!) and see if that helps temporarily. if it does, and comes back, you need to replace whichever part it was
p.s. you don't have a belt driven pump, so if it were power steering making the noise, it shouldn't affect the generator performance at all, since they're not linked.
EHPAS means that the power steering pump is driven electrically. It's a high power device and draws a lot of current when activated. The high current can pull down the voltage of the battery which would dim the lights, although it shouldn't drop that much if your alternator is working.
How much do your lights dim when you get the noise? There could be some kind of mechanical fault with the power steering that causes it to draw too much current and the alternator can't keep up.
Problem solved, but thank you everyone so much for your time replies and input.
Alternator free wheeling clutch pulley had thrown its hand in.
Someone advised me to remove the alternator belt and check the clutch but instead and after trying a number of ideas plus nearly booking in a Volvo Dealer.
I just used a long thin screwdriver to feel where the vibration was coming from when the engine was running which was through the alternator body, changed the whole unit in case that throws it's hand in and would need to pay for another which would make the new pulley replacement a waste of money.

I strongly recommend purchasing directly from the official website (vxdiag.com), where you can get excellent customer support!
Also, there are relevant installation tutorials on the website, which might be helpful to you!
